LEVEL MEASUREMENT WITH EXTENSOMETERS

Silo into a scale
Turn your existing Silo into a scale

Weighing by strain sensing allows level measurement of existing silos, tank or vessel. Extensometers measure the stress level changes in silo supports caused by material movement and therefore are not subject to the influence of angles of repose or air pockets. Quickly and easily installed on the silo structure without modification, this cost-effective measuring method is an excellent alternative to traditional level sensing.

SCAIME and its New Zealand partner EMC Industrial Group, a specialist in weighing and process automation, have partnered to offer a silo level measurement solution to New Zealand Steel Ltd. New Zealand Steel are the largest steel producer and operator of iron mines in New Zealand.

The customer required level measurement of a ferric oxide silo with a capacity of about 30t) . They initially fitted free space and guide radar level transducers, but this was unsuccessful.

Mesure de niveau de silo par extesomètres

The system proposed by SCAIME and EMC consists of four EPSI-AX extensometers fixed to the supports of the silo connected to an ALCB-A4 junction box. This was connected to a loadcell transmitter with a 4 - 20 mA out to the plant PLC.

These strain sensors measure the deformation of the silo structure, proportional to the product weight inside the silo.

Customer benefits

  • Quick installation without any modification on silo structure.
  • Reliable level measurement with an accuracy of 2 % FS meeting the customers' needs.
