EMC - Silo level measurement using extensometers

The customer

EMC is SCAIME’s partner in New Zealand EMC is one of the country’s largest suppliers of automation and industrial weighing systems.
SCAIME and the industrial group EMC joined forces to provide a silo-level measurement solution for New Zealand Steel. New Zealand Steel is the largest steel producer and iron mine operator in New Zealand.

Customer requirement

The customer needed a reliable level-measurement system for a ferric oxide silo with a capacity of 30t.
New Zealand Steel were seeking a new solution after having unsuccessfully evaluated several different radar-based level-measurement technologies.

Our solution

The system offered by SCAIME and EMC is composed of four EPSI-AX extensometers attached to the structure of the silo, connected by an ALCB-A4 junction box. The extensometers are conditioned by a weighing transmitter with a 4-20 mA analogue output.
The EPSI-AX extensometers measure deformation of the silo structure, proportional to the weight of the product inside the silo.
